• Ensemble Dark Horse: Harvey, for his habit of showing up in unexpected places, his status as a minor criminal with a conscience, and his ability to discover all sorts of useful information for Hope.
• Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Bernie. She's meant to be comic relief. Instead she comes over as at best lethally naïve. In the first book she has an affair with a married man who turns out to be a Nazi spy. In the second she gets engaged to a man who's manipulating her and thinks Hope is just jealous when she tries to warn Bernie. Also in the second book, Bernie's inability to keep her mouth shut becomes downright deadly. Britain is now at war but Bernie continues to gossip about every secret she knows.
