YMMV / Hellfire Saga

  • Awesome Music:
    • This game has a collection of both original and remixed music from various games. The first act of Malicious Glance in particular brings out an awesome Genesis remix of Dracula's Castle.
    • The final boss theme Through Hell and Fire combines the rock and roll of the Sonic series with a dark, ominous tone befitting of Dr Eggman's machine powered by the dark magic of Satan.
  • Narm Charm: The premise of the game sounds hilarious edgy and over the top on paper (i.e Sonic fighting the forces of Hell complete with dark visuals.) but in terms of execution, it's one of the most memorable Sonic ROMhacks due to being polished enough to rival the official Sonic games, with great music choices and custom boss fights, and even topping it off with an awesome finale involving Dr Eggman's machine by powered by Satan and the final phase of that fight taking place in a 3D void unlike the rest of the game. Hell, Sonic proves that he's badass enough that he takes on the final boss without needing to use his Super form!
  • That One Boss: As one would expect, Death is arguably the hardest boss in the game. Sure, none of the other end of level bosses are pushovers, but Death absolutely takes the cake - his first phase basically requires good use of Sonic's insta-shield to reliably hit him without taking damage in his first phase, and his second phase has multiple tricky to dodge attacks, including a spread shot that basically requires that you stand in very specific spots to not get hit.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: The final fight against Eggman's One-Winged Angel form utilities jaw-dropping sprite-scaling as he moves further closer or further away from the camera not unlike the SNES' Mode 7 capabilities, all this time while surrounded by a swirling multicolored vortex in the middle of a cosmic space. All without the aid of the Sega CD or Sega 32X add-on devices to boot.
