YMMV / Heist Society

Go To

  • Abandon Shipping: There may have been a few readers who saw Natalie as an interesting new rival for Hale's affection much like Nick was with Kat. Her Childhood Friend status and chatty, amiable personality certainly made it seem that way. But any hopes for this get shot down near the end of Perfect Scoundrels when Hale finds out that Natalie's been abetting her father in his plans to take down his family's company and might have even inspired him to do it; albeit unintentionally.

  • Designated Monkey: Simon in spades. As the group's hacker he's relegated to working behind the scenes and often has to settle for some rather humiliating hiding spaces to the point that a public bathroom is considered comfortable. He's re-introduced in Uncommon Criminals having a severe sunburn after being forced to work from a water tower in scalding heat and he drops out of Oxford University in Perfect Scoundrels after being rejected by who knows how many female students.

  • Fan-Preferred Couple: If this discussion thread is anything to go by [1] there's a sizeable number of people who would have preferred Nick as Kat's main love interest. Reasons include Nick being more interesting, the two having more in common (parents whose work takes them around the world, pressure to join the "family business" etc.), and overall being more proactive about his feelings for Kat. As opposed to Hale who has had years to make a move on her; Nick explicitly flirts with Kat, kisses her, and tells her that he likes her. Most of this was done within the week they met.

  • Jerkass Ball: Hale holds onto this pretty hard until the midway point of Perfect Scoundrels though it can be attributed to his grief. After Marcus informs him that his grandmother Hazel has died, he literally leaves Kat hanging from a harness in the middle of a heist and runs off with no explanation. Despite promising to call her, he does no such thing and Kat is forced to infiltrate his family's home just to make sure he's still alive. He then cuts her off before she can tell his mother they're dating showing that he'd been keeping their relationship a secret even before all of this and is rather short with her when she makes repeated attempts to comfort him.

    • This culminates in Hale breaking up with her after he finds out she went behind his back to investigate Hazel's will and when she shows up to the Hale Industries Genesis event to apologize, his anger is so palatable that she backs away from his radius. After helping him break into Garrett's files and having a talk with Silas, he finally expresses remorse for his behavior and the two reconcile.

  • Moral Event Horizon: Garrett crosses this in his second appearance when he threatens Kat literally choking her in the process and leaps past it with the revelation that he plans on bankrupting an entire corporation out of spite due to mistreatment by his corrupt employers when he could easily resign. Instead, he opts to stick around and execute a plan that will put thousands of workers out of a job. All of whom had nothing to do with his predicament. But he takes it a final step further in perhaps the most egregious crime a villain has committed in the series thus far when the crew overhears him arguing with Natalie about him going through the trouble of forging Hazel's signature on a Do Not Resuscitate to ensure that she'd pass away before she could fire him and end his plan. On top of this, he tries to shift the guilt onto his daughter claiming it to be "her idea" in reference to a few facetious comments she made.
