  • Alternative Character Interpretation
    • When Martin goes up to talk to Maria in Episode 4, Chapter 8, was he trying to offer her comfort, or was he angling for a chance to convince (or even manipulate) her into giving him her command?
    • There's also Messner's determination to fight for a more favorable outcome for Germany in spite of the circumstances and the fact that he knows about the Holocaust. Is he making a difficult choice to protect his countrymen from the wrath of their enemies, or is he throwing good after bad, sacrificing his troops and allowing crimes against humanity to continue?
    • Anja inspires questions similar to those that are raised about Messner's character, since she has similar motives, even if she isn't supposed to be fighting in the first place. Since one of Anzu's canonical justifications for reviving the tankery team- that they might as well give the school something to fight for rather than wait for MEXT to shut it down- obviously doesn't apply here, as actual lives are on the line, this raises some questions. Is she right or wrong to try to fight for Nazi Germany considering her circumstances, and does she even know what she's getting the other girls into?
  • Iron Woobie: Messner. The fight for Germany has taken a toll on him, and he's grown quite cynical as a result, but he still persists, even with a difficult fight and unpleasant choices.
  • Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: Sympathetic though she may be, Maria isn't just fighting a losing battle, but she's also fighting for Nazi Germany- not to win but for the slim chance of getting better conditions in the peace process. She also learns about the Holocaust in Episode 4, and that Messner believes that the alternative- having the Soviet Union take revenge on them- is even worse. Essentially, it's clear that she won't succeed, and possible that she shouldn't.
  • The Woobie: Maria, even more so compared to canon. In addition to fighting a losing battle for her country, one in which several of her friends have already died, she also had a traumatic experience in the past, and is horrified to learn that her country has been committing genocide.
