YMMV / GRIS

Go To

  • Award Snub: Despite the game's animation and art direction being hailed as a technical marvel, Gris walked away from the 2019 DICE Awards and SXSW Gaming Awards with no wins in any animation/design-related categories.
  • Awesome Art: Since this is an Art Game, that's practically a given.
  • Awesome Music: The music of Gris, all composed by Berlinist, is also nothing to scoff at. Every soundtrack piece fits with its respective chapter, but special mention should go to the titular two parted theme, Gris Pt. 1 and Pt. 2, the latter of which is accompanied by heartbreakingly lovely vocals from the character and her late mother's spirit as she helps her daughter move past her grief.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: The cube-headed spirit is only in the game very briefly, but is utterly beloved nonetheless for providing someone Gris can care about in a relatively dark part of her life.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Pretty much anything concerning that shadow following you throughout the game. It hits a crescendo when it swallows you near the end.
  • Tear Jerker: The general concept of this game is Gris coming to terms with her grief. You follow her as she confronts her own feelings.
    • During the water level. The darkness comes and destroys a statue, shattering it into pieces. Not an uncommon feeling for someone struggling with depression.
    • The climax of the game where Gris desperately tries to keep her hope alive while the darkness threatens to consume her fully. Then her mother sings back to her...
    • The ending of the game, where Gris kisses her mother one last time and is ready to let her go and accept her death.
  • Spiritual Adaptation: The first bird boss battle is likely the closest we'll ever get to a playable version of the Symphony No.5 segment of Fantasia 2000.
  • The Woobie: Gris. Not hard for the audience to feel this way when they find out she's dealing with the grief of losing her mother, who she was very close to.
