- Ensemble Dark Horse: Holocaust survivor and Guilt-Ridden Accomplice of the ship's dictator Dr. Goldman, aging matinee idol Ronald Bentley, and menacing Dragon-in-Chief Wesker are all secondary characters but are the most well-remembered of the survivors besides their leader. Being played by Jean Marsh, John Carradine, and Frank Gorshin helps.
- Hilarious in Hindsight: A Gadgeteer Genius creates an underwater city full of well-to-do people in an art deco environment with a dark secret? Sounds like a prototype for BioShock.
- Romantic Plot Tumor: The romance between the Wasteland Warlords daughter and the head rescuer is often seen as unnecessary and unexceptional.
- Slow-Paced Beginning: The movie takes about forty minutes or so for the divers to get inside of the Goliath and get a look at its society.
- Vanilla Protagonist: The rescue party members get more screentime than anyone else but are widely felt to be less interesting than the members of the survivor community in the air bubble aboard the sunken ship.
