- Overshadowed by Controversy: It's difficult to talk about Girl without talking about the backlash it received. The film focuses extensively on Lara's body, up to and including her genitals, in a way that many trans activists and film critics regarded as objectifying and transphobic. In addition, the fixation on Trans Tribulations struck some as "trauma porn". The fact that Girl was directed by a cisgender man didn't help. In addition, the casting of a cis boy as a trans girl was a contentious decision, although most agree that Polster did a fine job.
