- Fanon Discontinuity: Though the book is generally seen as one of the more decent ghostwritten V.C. Andrews books, there are a few fans who disregard it either because Andrews herself didn't complete it (and it is disputed just how much she actually did write), or because of the many continuity errors. Some ignore it due to revealing Christopher and Corinne/Corrine to be siblings.
- The Woobie: Alicia. From losing her husband (whom she genuinely loved) to a heart attack after he found Malcolm trying to rape her, to being raped numerous times by Malcolm and falling pregnant as a result, to being victim blamed by Olivia for that incident, to being locked away in the attic which separated her from her son Christopher during her pregnancy... She did eventually reclaim her child and have a happy second marriage, but then she died relatively young of breast cancer.
