YMMV / Futurama S3 E5 "The Birdbot of Ice-Catraz"

  • Harsher in Hindsight: Bender expressing a wish for the death penalty might just seem like his warped sense of laziness at first, but following "Lethal Inspection", we learn that he thought he was immortal at this point (in the sense that he would be downloaded into another body if his current one died); Bender may have legitimately assumed that getting the death penalty would have just been another easy way to avoid work, and only learned the truth when it was too late...
  • Informed Wrongness: Bender is treated as going mad with power once named Captain, but the worst he does is develop a posh, bragging persona and give Fry the Embarrassing Nickname of "Wiggles." He isn't even malicious or incompetent about it; he flies the ship well, treats his crew with a fair amount of respect and professionalism (even inviting both Fry and Zoidberg to dine and drink with him at "the captain's table"), fondly calls Fry his first mate, and takes Fry's increasingly hostile insults in stride. (Which, honestly, is better than how Bender normally treats people.) The worst he does is eventually fly sober due to his depression over Fry's jealousy-fueled rejection.
  • "Stop Having Fun" Guys: As Leela says, if it's fun in any way, it's not environmentalist. (Except blowing up dams.)
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Downplayed, but Fry starts off resenting Bender for being named Captain because he felt he should get the title, and leaves Bender's crew in a huff. Later, when Fry names himself Captain, he's shown to be far more incompetent and tyrannical than Bender ever was. While Fry gives Bender back his hat and shows respect when they reunite at the end of the episode, the show does little else to explore his epiphany.
