- Harsher in Hindsight:
- A lot of people both then and now have been creeped out by the similarities between this book's events and the sinking of the RMS Titanic.
- The Titan's collision with the Royal Age is remarkably similar to an accident involving the Titanic's sister ship Olympic and the Nantucket Lightship LV-117. In both cases, the ocean liner was travelling in heavy fog and struck the smaller ship along the side, breaking it in half and sinking it.
- Just Here for Godzilla: Many reviews accuse it of being a choppy, uninvolving read that would have long since lapsed into obscurity if it wasn't for the eerie similarities to a later real event.
- Mainstream Obscurity: A lot more people have heard of this book, thanks to the aforementioned similarity to the sinking of the Titanic, than have actually read it.
