  • Tear Jerker: An extremely poignant one comes out of nowhere in The Lark's Lament. The Fool Family passes a herb seller, and Theo remarks quietly to Claudia that whenever he smells herbs, he imagines being a small boy being held by his mother. He never was. She was murdered immediately after giving birth to him.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: The murder victim of The Parisian Prodigal, La Rossa, was a illegitimate woman who was forced into prostitution after her father's wealth dried up, and then was killed by her long lost husband after she deliberately taunted him with how he was responsible for her current state. Except that she's at least partly to blame for her own fate as well; she conspired with her husband to murder her legitimate half-brother so that she could inherit everything, and she caught the fallout when the plot went wrong and her father's fortune was decimated.
