YMMV / Firefly: Coup de Grâce

  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Annie can get rather grating, especially in her first-person POV chapters. She has a more bothersome religiosity than Shepherd Book, believing in God's will and at times considering herself an instrument of it, coming off as fairly judgemental. She repeatedly chastises Mal for his language and upon hearing about Inara, has a rather dim view of her until Book gives her some advice about being open-minded. Still, she believes some people "broaden their minds so much everything important falls out," implying a somewhat intolerant viewpoint. She also vastly overvalues her skills, yet insists on coming along on the bounty hunt, and even after getting concussed fights tooth and nail against Mal's order to head back with the injured Jayne, unable to see that she's now a liability. When she ditches Jayne to head back on her own, she gets captured, because a one-armed eighteen-year-old girl is no match for a grown man with both arms and a life accustomed to brawling and fighting. Then there's the bit where she ensures Mal will take the job by calling the port authorities and having Serenity impounded for mechanical faults, so Mal will need to take her job to pay the fine and get the parts needed for Kaylee to fix the ship (though she vastly underestimated how much Mal, and everyone else, cares about Serenity, and does feel bad when she sees how angry and despondent having Serenity impounded makes him. Still, she never admits it was her doing, preferring to avoid the uncomfortable talk rather than come clean.) And yet the whole crew, especially Zoe and River (excepting Jayne) takes a liking to her, working hard to save her when she gets shot in the climax and bidding her fond farewells as if she's an Honorary True Companion.
