- Alternative Character Interpretation: Is Edvard really a zealot who truly believes he is morally superior due to him being a bishop, or is he only using all of this as an excuse just to obtain dominance and a powerful position? Either way he is still pretty unsympathetic.
- Award Snub: While it did win more Academy Awards than any other film in Swedish history, it was a favourite for the Best Picture nomination as well - but since it was nominated for (and won) Best Foreign Language, it couldn't run for Best Picture.
- Love to Hate: Edvard is, to say the least, a despicably abusive individual with zero redeeming qualities. But Jan Malmsjö's amazing performance made Edvard one of the most popular and memorable Swedish movie villains in history. Max Von Sydow, who was actually the first to be offered to play the role praised Jan's performance and even said that he couldn't have done it better.

- Peter Stormare makes an uncredited appearance as one of the men helping Isak with the trunk.
- Pernilla August, who plays Maj, would go on to become Darth Vader's mom.
