• Do Not Do This Cool Thing: The Training from Hell necessary to even attempt the summit is grimly described, as is the danger of mountaineering, the fact that many Everest expeditions are forced to turn back before the summit, the uncomfortable camping conditions, and how expeditions to Mount Everest can bring out the worst in people due to all the corporate glitz involved, with Cap even wondering Was It Really Worth It?. However, the sense of boldness and enthusiasm of climbers like Dominic can still be infectious.
• Unintentional Period Piece: Tilt's movies being VCRs, the camp's VCR player being viewed as a luxury item, Sammy using a Walkman, the lack of mention of climate change affecting the mountains, and the novelty of kids climbing Mount Everest all emphasize the pre-2010's setting.
