• Improved Second Attempt: Many modern readers don't approve of the friendship between Harriet and Emma fading by the end of the novel, and the narrative portraying it as a good thing. In this film, after Harriet accepts Robert Martin's proposal and learns her father's identity now she's come of age, she expects Emma to drop her once it's revealed that he is a tradesman who makes galoshes. However, Emma is genuinely happy for her and invites her to bring her father to visit when he comes to Higbury, implying their friendship will continue.
