YMMV / Emily the Criminal

Go To

  • Anvilicious: The movie is not subtle about showing how even an ostensibly decent person can easily be driven into a life of crime by financial desperation and shoddy economic prospects. Emily's position as a gig worker is also shown as unsustainable and allows her to be easily exploited by her bosses, and there's also the pointed Take That! at unpaid internships.
  • Magnificent Bastard: Emily Benetto, swallowed in college debt and shunned by the workforce for having beaten up her abusive boyfriend, conscripts herself into the realm of credit card fraud. Initially working under the crooks Youcef and his cousin Khalil, Emily shows such skill at being a fraudster that she strikes out on her own and rips off countless thousands of dollars from civilians and stores. Using quick wit and a taser to take down those trying to rip her off and constantly staying ahead of the law, Emily helps Youcef rip off Khalil for a small fortune after Khalil betrays them. Emily chooses the money over Youcef when he is severely injured and leaves him behind for the authorities as she flees the country and dedicates herself wholly to a life of successful crime.
