  • Dueling Movies: An entirely one-sided example, as The Expendables repeatedly challenged their viewers' masculinity if this movie out-grossed it.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: The book and movie become this after Gilbert and the man Felipe was based off separated in 2016. Though their separation was apparently better than Gilbert's divorce with her first husband. It gets worse because the separation happened because Gilbert realized she was in love with her friend Rayya Elias after Elias was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Elias died early 2018.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Liz in the film, for some viewers. This is partly due to the film leaving out things like Liz and her husband's relationships problems, and her struggle with depression and financial troubles during her divorce. As a result, Liz can come across not as a lonely divorcee trying to find herself, but a spoilt rich woman who divorces her loving husband for no real reason, Wangsts about it and then goes on vacation. It also leaves out the $250K advance from her publisher, which effectively took care of her financial woes. This article from Bitch Media analyzes the phenomenon of "priv-lit."
