  • Award Snub: Despite hitting precursors, "Girl in the Movies" was snubbed for a nomination at the Oscars.
  • Awesome Music: "Girl in the Movies," which ended up snagging Golden Globe and Critic's Choice nominations for Best Original Song.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Hannah, the gloriously snarky Butch Lesbian. She just doesn't give a shit what anyone thinks, something not even Willowdean can lay claim to.
  • Tearjerker: When Rosie and Willowdean finally connect, and Rosie tearfully admits she "gave too much of [Lucy] away."
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Though the audience is meant to see Willowdean as grounded, rebellious and honest, she often comes off as a Jerkass at the exact moments you're meant to root for her. Though Rosie is far from a perfect mother, Willowdean is completely dismissive and condescending towards Rosie's interests and the work she puts in to provide for them, makes little effort to connect with her, and though Willowdean is hurting from Aunt Lucy's death, she doesn't seem to realize that there's a possibility that her mother is also grieving her own sister. She also comes off as unnecessarily abrasive, as when a girl harmlessly inquires about her mother, Ellen shows interest in the pageant, and when Millie and Hannah decide to join in with her crusade. She does grow out of a lot of this, however.
