YMMV / Duke Bluebeard's Castle

Go To

  • Awesome Music: The opening of the fifth door reveals the full extent of Bluebeard's wealth as a landowner. The accompanying power chords are overwhelmingly awesome and are played by a pipe organ at full volume alongside the entire brass orchestra.
  • Nightmare Fuel: The entire opera is filled to the brim with pure nightmare fuel, considering its source material. The opera's set in a dark and creepy castle with seven locked doors, and there's already a rather cold feel in the relationship between Bluebeard and his new wife Judith. Let's not forget about the dead ex-wives. The score itself is incredibly terrifying.
  • Vindicated by History: The opera was rejected by the Hungarian Fine Arts Commission as unstageworthy when Bartok submitted it for an award. It wasn't performed until 5 years later, but is now considered one of Bartok's most important works, and, despite its unusually small cast causing some difficulty - it only has two main characters, and three silent roles, which is a little awkward if you have a large group of performers on retainer - it receives regular performance.
