YMMV / Dial H for Hero

Go To

  • Cult Classic: Dial H may not have sold enough to last beyond 16 issues, but it's still regarded as one of the few genuinely enjoyable comics to have emerged out of the mess that was the New 52. Mainly because the series didn't fall into Too Bleak, Stopped Caring, was self aware about how ridiculous it was while still being both dark and emotional, and for its continuity not falling victim to Executive Meddling like every other title did.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Boy Chimney, the first brand new Dial identity, has become quite popular. He actually received a cameo in the third issue, where Nelson experiences a memory of Boy Chimney fighting alongside a group of home-themed superheroes called Team House, against a monster called Rake Dragon.
  • The Firefly Effect: The New 52 revival came out during a period where DC refused to publish any more than 52 series at a time, and thus any new series had only a few months to build an audience or get cancelled. Consequently, many readers assumed that Dial H was probably doomed and didn't bother to pick it up.
  • Spiritual Successor: Has one in Ben 10, where the plot and heroes dialed take on a Men in Black flavor.
  • Squick: Invoked in canon in the issue where Nelson turns into Chief Mighty Arrow, in which Manteau explains that she's outright rejected and not used certain "heroes" created by the dial because they had problematic aspects (such as, presumably, the unseen Golliwog and SS Ilsa), or because their nature or powers were downright unpleasant (such as, presumably, the unseen Dr. Cloaca and Kid Torture).
