• Unintentional Period Piece: As a manga written during the 80s and 90s, Desert Rose is a fascinating glimpse at what speculative fiction wondered about during that time. Several characters ruminate at a "future" European Union, Helga's backstory is informed by the division of Berlin, and in Chapter 9, some characters refer to events in the 60s as being recent history. And of course, the outfits and weapons used are emblematic of the time period, with Uzis and Mac-10s being a much more common sight in the manga than they are today, while plate carriers — a ubiquitous sight in all military and action stories now — are nary in sight.
