** Smokey, big time. Many people like him for being an unusually intelligent and dangerous villain who goes through a considerable CharacterDevelopment, but there are also those who think he gets too much focus and sympathy, especially during the last arcs of Badlands.

** While the Crossed epidemic is a global problem, we only see its effects in America, Australia, England, Scotland and Japan, while several of the existing story arcs (such as ''Conquers All'', ''Shrink'' or the Sutter's camp story arc) could have easily been set elsewhere in the world, like in South America, Africa or Russia (bonus with the protagonist of ''Conquers All'' being a Russian mobster), without greatly changing the plot. The most we get is covers of several issues, most of which have nothing to do with the issue's plot in question (see above).

** Despite how graphic and dark the original run by Garth Ennis was, a lot of the time when gorn or nudity could be used, there was a SceneryCensor or GoryDiscretionShot, alongside some really decent storylines and characters. The same cannot be said for many of the following comics. The direct follow-up, ''Family Values'', is particularly considered the volume that started the whole descent into rape, ''incest'', extreme gore [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking and shoddy plotting.]] ''Badlands'' followed the same path, with the first arc (''Of the World in Its Becoming'', which also had Ennis' involvement) not relying on the violence and nudity too much and having interesting characters and unique situations, while the following arcs (particularly the second, ''Homo Superior'') used gratuitous sex, nauseating {{Gorn}}, and an abundance of either {{flat|Character}} and/or [[HateSink completely unsympathetic]] main characters.

** ''Badlands Issue #62-70'': [[CowboyCop Gavin Edward Land]] was a former police detective who wishes to get revenge on the people who raped and murdered his daughter and possibly son and wife. After being sent to prison for his attempted assassination of Curtis Wentz, which ends in the death of 4 innocent people, Curtis strikes the deal with the Warden to keep the prison running for 5 years until the outbreak hits. Immediately figuring the spread of infections and breaking him and his prisoners out and arming them, Gavin departs to track down and murdering all the people who had a role in his daughters death, [[YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness even killing people he seemingly forgave after they served their purpose]]. Forming a [[EnemyMine tense truce with Wentz]] in order to save the people in San Diego, Gavin and his friend Hayley works with him and the coast guard to take out Crossed, showing to efficiently wipe out Crossed and saving families. Deciding to take matters in his own hands to save thousands, he has himself and Wentz hijack a tank before personally stealing a ship themselves to have everyone board it to escape San Diego to an island of safety. After ensuring that everyone is alive and that his ex wife and son are still alive on the island, Gavin murders Wentz and fulfills his promise to his daughter, and is content to find his wife and son on the island and start a new life.

*** [[ActionGirl Hazuki]] is the [[MafiaPrincess daughter of the Mob Boss]] Yamada and the friend of Satoshi and the titular group. Despite her abusive childhood to morph her into a cold killer and still planning to take control of her father's syndicate one day, Hazuki is a [[SpoiledSweet compassionate]] girl and an amazing friend to the group, using her father's connections to get Miku out of trouble and even showing to be fearlessly [[GirlyBruiser beat up the thugs attacking her friends]]. When trapped at a festival with Miku when C-Day hits, Hazuki shows no hesitation murdering Crossed with ease when bringing Miku with safety, and when her father arrives with her friends comes up with a great plan of [[DivideAndConquer going deeper into the building to lessen the Crossed's numbers]] and kill them while they are distracted with themselves. Even after getting infected with the Virus, she retains amount of sanity left to prevent her father from killing Satoshi, bringing her [[TeamPet pet tiger]] Usama on their side and calling her father out on everything, leading to his suicide. Despite turning completely psychotic, she retains her humanity and still shows a complete [[PowerOfFriendship dedication for her friends]], refusing to entertain the idea of hurting them. Seeing no other way out, Hazuki and her friends make a LastStand against the Crossed horde outside, having her friends be willingly infected by her so they can all die fighting in a glorious battle, the five friends content to die with each other.
** ''Wish You Were Here'': [[BraveScot Rab Harcus]] is the co-leader of the Cavas Islands, and as opposed to the arrogant and short sighted Don, is a intelligent and caring man who wishes to keep his residents safe. Creating a tight and intricate system on the island to defend against The Crossed, Rab hosts a raffle with Don to force several people out to find supplies, while trying to keep the raffle fair and unbiased, to the point of figuring out and catching Shaky when trying to rig the raffle in his favor. [[TeethClenchedTeamwork Able to work with Shaky and Don]] to take out threats to the community, Rab works with them to fear-monger the island residents into raiding the Driftfleet into getting their supplies, only failing due to the whistleblowing Jackson and Don’s arrogance. When the Crossed horde led by Aoleinne surrounds the island with new brown numbers, Rab leads a dangerous yet very successful mission, [[LuredIntoATrap managing to lure the remaining Crossed to a ship in order to be blown up]] while managing to have his remaining survivors flee the island, but not after betraying and [[LeftForDead crippling Shaky for bait]] due to his dangerousness. [[WellIntentionedExtremist Willing to get his hands dirty for the good of his people]], Rab managed to get what little people he had left to safety as he leads them away to find another safe island, managing to win against Aoleinne‘s horde.

*** [[BadassNormal Satoshi]] is the friend of Hazuki and titular group who wishes to reunite and protect their friends within the infamous C-Day. An already capable survivor who murder Crossed with ease, he easily clears the streets out with Hazuki’s mob boss father Yamada and his friends. Deciding to uphold getting to Hazuki and Miku as a priority, he orders his friend to shoot down construction to separate them from Boss Yamada and his men, [[LeftForDead leaving them to the Crossed]] so they can get away and resulting in several of their deaths. Not fearing Boss Yamada for betraying him and showing to be capable to wiping out the Crossed horde inside the building, even personally ordering the wipe out of the last remaining ones himself, Satoshi agrees that since they are cornered and have nowhere to go, they decide to make a LastStand against the Crossed. Having himself and his friends willingly infected by Hazuki, Satoshi and his friends all end up fighting side by side in a glorious death as friends against the Crossed Horde outside.

** ''Volume 1'':[[MamaBear Cindy]] is the [[PragmaticHero cold but competent leader]] of a group of survivors making their way toward Alaska. Showing great strength and altruism from day one, Cindy saved several survivors during the chaos of C-Day and quickly took the leadership role. She proved herself highly effective against the Crossed and was always willing to make the hard calls, such as [[WouldHurtAChild killing cannibalistic children]] and allowing Kitrick to execute Geoff after he becomes a menace to the group. After losing her son Cindy becomes broken before separating from the group with Stan to give her son a proper burial. Returning to discover their group was wiped out by the Crossed, Cindy snaps back to her old tactical self, realizing that the maniacs are half-dead and vulnerable, and convinces Stan to avenge their fallen companions, a plan that they execute flawlessly.

* WhatDoYouMeanItWasntMadeOnDrugs: It’s easy to feel this way about the series as a whole, although the David Lapham arcs stick out the most, with several having the most disjointed plots, copious amounts of TooBleakStoppedCaring, Gorn and weirdness.
