  • Anvilicious: Rebbekah is basically the personification of every negative stereotype people have about Conservative Americans, and it's all played completely straight. Patriot is even worse.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: In the eyes of many fans, Doug's Cloudcuckoolander hilarity and competence in figuring out the nature of the virus make him more popular than the lead characters.
  • Fridge Horror: Patriot himself is Fridge Horror personified, especially pre-zombification. He's been raised from birth to believe that he's America's saviour, which he and obviously his parents see as nothing more than killing and intimidating anyone who doesn't look like them or share their jingoist values. Despite his namesake, Patriot shows no camaraderie towards his fellow Americans, bullying girls and insulting teachers with no provocation. The kid would most likely have become a domestic terrorist if the virus didn't get to him when it did.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Doug is treated like a nerd for knowing the word "pandemic" and caring about how it's distinct from "epidemic." Fast forward to after 2020, and pretty sure most people on earth are unfortunately very familiar with the word "pandemic."
  • Nightmare Fuel: One of the infected kids attacking his baby brother. It may have been offscreen, but the screaming is pretty nerve-wracking.
    • The fact that the virus transforms kids almost immediately after infection. When Patriot is infected, he already becomes unresponsive and aggressive at the nurse’s office. When Dink is infected and begins scratching other children, one student becomes aggressive in the time it takes for Mr. Peterson to walk to him. In less than a minute, the entire playground is converted into hordes of feral children. The closest we get to a child becoming infected onscreen is when the baby is infected, and even then, all we hear is it’s screams turning into a strange, insect-like chitter.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot:
    • Patriot could have had his own movie with a completely different genre, more specifically an Action Movie. (Gradeschooler-age Domestic Terrorist, anyone?)
    • Hell, Wade's initial emotional abuse towards Lucy could have been a tragic psychological drama or a drama where he (Wade) redeems himself, in other words, this also could have been its own movie.
