YMMV / Colossal Kaiju Combat!

Go To

  • Base-Breaking Character: While pretty much every new kaiju is this, Duncan, Macrosaurus, and Muligahn are among the most divisive. While some — including Simon Strange — appreciated the unique slapstick comedy the character could have brought to the table, Duncan gets the worst of it due to his creator being a member of the Furry Fandom and a persistent rumor maintaining that he was the main reason Colossal Kaiju Combat failed, alleging that he got into arguments with the game's staff over Duncan not being the most-powerful kaiju and pulled his Kickstarter funding when his demands were refused. Both Simon Strange and Duncan himself have gone on-record trying to debunk this rumor, to little success.
  • Mis-blamed: A persistent rumor is that Duncan was the primary — if not sole — reason the game "failed", with many disparaging Duncan due to his creator being a member of the Furry Fandom. A commonly perpetuated version of the story is that Duncan's creator had a falling out with Simon Strange over Creative Differences regarding his character — allegedly having wanted Duncan to be the strongest character in the game and being upset when Red from the NES Godzilla Creepypasta was slated to be more powerful — and pulled out of the Kickstarter when his demands were refused, thereby causing it to fail. However, development of CKC continued for several years after the Kickstarter ended, with Duncan remaining on the planned roster for Fall of Nemesis, and the project ultimately failed due to having been mismanaged. Despite both Simon Strange and Duncan himself explaining their sides of the story in an effort to debunk it,note  the rumor that "furries ruined Colossal Kaiju Combat" has persisted for years afterwards.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Hey, remember that Godzilla NES Creepypasta? Remember that monster called Red, who was so damn powerful and large that he could devour the likes of Godzilla and Mothra while killing people from across the fourth wall and then send them to an eternal state of torment in his own world? He's in this game! Sweet dreams! On a slightly happier note, his arch enemy Solomon is also in. Still the best.
  • The Scrappy: Duncan is viewed as this for many reasons. He was basically meant to be a Joke Character, from his design being a giant green kangaroo to his rather comical attacks, but many were baffled with its inclusion and how he didn't fit in the rest of the cast of the game. The creator of Duncan is also blamed for being the reason the game was cancelled, despite the fact that the real reason was due to poor management. The only "bad" thing that happened in Duncan's involvement is that he wanted to bail from the project entirely because he was uncomfortable with the way he was being treated during development.
  • The Woobie: Many kaiju, but Scaos in particular. He feeds on strong emotions and is dictated by them, so he could have been a perfectly kind individual had he been kept around nice people. Instead, he was essentially force-fed negativity until he became a psychopath so vicious that he has to be chained up at all times in what basically amounts to a huge metal straightjacket/muzzle, and he can STILL overpower aliens, demons, and even gods while completely restrained. All because his sanity has been beaten out of him from the inside through years of experiencing the trauma of an entire race.
