YMMV / Candies 'n Curses

Go To

  • Awesome Music:
    • The boss battle theme, an energetic and exciting song to really pump you up for the difficult encounters.
    • Undead Library's theme, a very enchanting and mystical tune that still manages to be very catchy.
    • Dinette of Doom's theme, the most upbeat and energetic song in the game, keeping the spooky vibe of the rest of the soundtrack intact.
    • Come the curse crusher update, all these songs were remixed for that mode. These remixes often enhance their best aspects even further.
  • Demonic Spiders:
    • Spitter Spiders. They always hang out at the top or bottom of the level, making them difficult to see at a quick glance. And if you don't, they'll fire incredibly quick projectiles at you that can easily catch you off guard. Thankfully, these projectiles only deal four hit points worth of damage, but with the clash charm equipped, which is often used in speedrunning, that damage is tripled to twelve hit points.
    • Miasma Knights and Inferno Knights. The Spectre Knights of previous floors could be a bit annoying, but their charge attack was ultimately still manageable. Their elemental variants, however, leave a trail of poison pools or embers as they charge. It's difficult to attack them from the front because of their sword, and it's difficult to attack them from the back because of the poison or embers. Even if you do attack them safely, they spawn either a poison cloud or a different ember that both take off eight hit points that will likely hit you anyway.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Necro Witch is perhaps the most popular boss in the game, due to her memorable design and hypnotizing dance animation.
    • Jack similar gained quite a lot of popularity, since he also has a memorable design, as well as unique boss mechanics and his laugh being a Most Wonderful Sound.
  • Goddamned Boss: Phantom Worm is widely considered the most annoying boss. It must be hit nine times to be defeated, and can only be hit once between each time it goes offscreen. What makes this worse is that attacks that normally deal double damage to bosses, such as bombs, deal normal damage to Phantom Worm. These elements cause this boss fight to drag on quite a bit longer than most other bosses.
  • Scrappy Weapon: Of the three flashlight classes, lanterns are the most disliked. While they have their uses, they're unreliable and often difficult to use. Most players prefer to stick with the simple but reliable beams or the versatile blades. Even the unlockable boss drop lanterns leave quite a bit to be desired; the Hot Head's Chamberstick and Phantom's Lantern are only slightly better than other lanterns at best and pale in comparison to the powerful Worm Light and Jack'o Slash Blade.
  • That One Boss: Nearly every curse crusher boss qualifies.
    • Blaze Devil bounces around the room at quick speeds, spawning floating embers and flame shockwaves that travel around the walls on impact. All these projectiles on top of the decent size of the boss itself makes it very difficult to dodge everything.
    • Necro Scholar has an upgraded falling skull attack that gives some of the skulls a laser beam attack that deals six hit points of damage. The laser activates almost immediately after stepping next to them, requiring that you jump up or down to avoid it. However, there are still tons of surrounding skulls, and it's difficult to jump to another safe position, especially with a blade equipped that prevents horizontal movement while jumping.
    • Blast Worm combines the annoyingly dragged out Phantom Worm with new laser attacks that fill up most of the screen and are difficult to consistently dodge. While the laser isn't too strong, falling into it carries the risk that you'll take a couple more hits before you can make it back into a safe area, quickly racking up damage.
    • Pyro Jack will frequently surround areas with thorns that restrict movement. This comes on top of filling rooms with floating embers and bombarding the player with explosives and huge vine attacks. With so much going on, it's difficult to stay out of harm. Worse, Pyro Jack is less likely than vanilla Jack to bait you into attacking him, meaning you can't always effectively get two hits for the price of one, causing the fight to drag longer.
