YMMV / Campfire Stories

  • Misaimed Fandom: Despite the two, Zach in particular, being explicit about their time in the military being hell, with specific stories bringing up examples of mismanagement, petty bullying and being left alone in the middle of hostile territory, there's enough people proclaiming that their stories encouraged them to enlist.
  • Squick: "Best" Military Experiences includes a description of Mike's feces after eating nothing but MREs for two weeks. Tellingly, the anecdote is preceded by a content warning suggesting skipping it if the viewer is eating.
  • Tear Jerker: Zach's Bradley story is probably one of his most tragic and quite frankly angering stories to date: During his time in Iraq, he was once asked to clear the Bushmaster chain gun on a Bradley, with no explanation for why the crew couldn't do it other than "they're gone". It turned out that what happened was the Bradley had been hit by three IEDs while part of a convoy. After the third, the gunner and commander decided to ride in a different vehicle, but left the young, rookie driver to operate the Bradley. It was then hit by a fourth IED, which knocked out the driver, his radio, and the vehicle's tracking system, and rather than bother to check on the poor guy, they assumed he was dead and left him alone in the middle of Iraq. When the driver finally woke up, he was badly concussed, disoriented, and without any sort of system to help him locate his convoy, but, assuming that they must have been nearby because surely there was no way they would just abandon him, he began driving back and forth along the road, still disoriented and in a semi-delirious state. Luckily, he ended up drawing the attention of the gate guards, who realized that something was wrong and managed to get him to stop and get him medical attention. Unlike most of Zach's stories, this one has him genuinely enraged at the authority figures responsible, and other former military personnel have also expressed their outrage that such an incident was allowed to take place, especially when others have confirmed that this incident did happen. According to several comments, the convoy's assistant commander went as far as falsifying reports by claiming the Bradley was completely destroyed and no body could be recovered for the driver. Several members of the convoy, including both the commander and the assistant commander, received time in jail for what they did.
