  • Misaimed Fandom: Some viewers were disappointed that the film doesn't reveal the identity of the cameraman, but Michael Haneke has stated that the perpetrator's identity was of secondary importance to the film's Central Theme of guilt.
  • Spiritual Successor: Many critics consider this film to be one to Lost Highway. In both films, the main characters receive anonymous videotapes of their house and are disturbed by the mysterious cameraman's invasion of their privacy. Plus, some of the major characters are named Laurent. Eventually, the videotapes reveal some skeletons in the closet for both husband characters. There are also ambiguous hints that the wife is possibly cheating on the husband, and both films incorporate real-world tragedies in their themes.
  • Tear Jerker: Majid breaking down in tears after Georges accuses him of sending the tapes is heartbreaking to watch.
  • The Woobie: Majid. Regardless of whether he sent the tapes or not, he's had a horrible and traumatic life, losing his parents, then losing his adoptive family because of Georges' petty dislike of him, heavily implied to be abused at the orphanage he was sent to, and in the present he's shown living in a run down apartment with his son, suggesting he doesn't have a very well-paying job. So much so, that he commits suicide.
