  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: Layla's tap dance.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: In Japan, this is one of the most beloved and iconic American indie films. Japanese society still places a lot of emphasis on getting married and not disappointing your parents, so a lot of viewers can relate to Billy going that far. The Japanese cult following for the movie even extends to Gallo himself: his artwork is commonly seen in Japanese modern art museums, he appeared in the Japanese film Human Trust, and he was the visual inspiration and source of the names for Vincent Volaju in Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' on Heaven's Door, Vincent Smith in Silent Hill 3 and Vincent Brooks from Catherine
  • Heartwarming Moments: Despite his attitude, Billy has several moments of being a real sweetheart.
    • At the end, he calls Goon back and apologizes for insulting him and even agrees to start calling him Rocky.
    • When he realizes his love for Layla, he buys her a heart-shaped cookie. Then he turns to a random customer in the diner and asks if he has a girlfriend. He confirms that he does, so Billy buys him one too, to take home.
    • The final shot of Billy in Layla's arms.
    • While it happens gradually and subtly, Layla agreeing to stay and look after Billy is also quite heartwarming, especially when she more or less admits her love for him.
  • Jerkass Woobie: Billy is a huge jerk but we eventually learn he's a Jerk with a Heart of Gold and has his reasons for being so nasty.
  • Literary Agent Hypothesis: According to Word of God, the events in the movie were not what "really" happened but is Billy's perception of his own actions. Considering his low self-esteem, it makes sense.
