YMMV / Breaking Bad S3 E2 "Caballo Sin Nombre"

  • Informed Wrongness: From Jesse's perspective: his parents kick him out of his own home, are polite but not willing to be close with him after he's gone through rehab, and then flip and sell the house while trying to cover up that there was a meth lab in the basement. From a more outside perspective: Jesse was living in a house that wasn't even in his name for free. Just how much he took care of Ginny is ambiguous (if you believe Jesse, it was a lot, but there's no telling if he was honest). His parents set a relatively reasonable boundary with him after he tried to re-establish contact with him (especially considering he didn't tell his parents he had gone to rehab and was sober). As for not disclosing the lab to get more money for the house? Disclosing the lab would have also meant turning Jesse in – something his parents notably never did throughout the series. Cathartic as Jesse's purchase of the house is, the Pinkmans come across more like a Reasonable Authority Figure.
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • Saul clearly takes a great deal of pleasure in one-upping the stuffy lawyer Jesse's parents hired, who obviously disapproves of Saul's methods. This becomes much more meaningful when we learn that Saul's brother was a similarly upscale lawyer who looked down on Saul (then Jimmy) in the same manner.
    • When Saul meets up with Jesse's parents, he's delighted that they recognize him from the commercials and billboards, even joyfully saying his "Better Call Saul" Character Catchphrase. Fast-forward to the events of Better Call Saul itself, and a cab driver recognizes Gene Takovic's old alias and forces him to say his catchphrase, with Gene miserable at being forced to do so.
  • Memetic Mutation: The pizza Walt throws on the roof, which inspired people to attempt it in real life, often at the house where the scene was shot. For obvious reasons, since the house is still lived in, there is now a large gate surrounding it.
  • Paranoia Fuel: The end of the episode shows that your house can be very insecure and easy to break into. Despite Skyler taking the precaution to change the locks, Walt still manages to get inside. (And without breaking a window or sliding glass door, which he could have done and allowed him to gain access more easily than the way he did.) Mike easily manages to plant a bug in a way that it's likely that nobody will ever notice. And most nightmarishly, the Cousins stroll right into the house after Walt leaves the door unlocked, with the intent of savagely murdering Walt as soon as he gets out of the shower. People you may know nothing about can easily gain access to your house or invade your privacy, and to a professional criminal the average house has only feeble defenses that they can easily circumvent. Have fun thinking about that before you go to sleep tonight.
