• Fair for Its Day: Ephesians 5-6 instructs husband and wives, parents and children, and masters and slaves on how they should treat each other. Consider how in ancient Rome, the paterfamilias held absolute power over his wife, his children, and his slaves. In theory at least, he could even kill any one of them with impunity. "Husbands, love your wives," "Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger," and "Masters, respect your slaves" were all revolutionary concepts at the time.
