YMMV / Book of Ecclesiastes

Go To

  • Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: To many religious readers and even some non-religious readers of the Bible: Ecclesiastes and its pessimistic (albeit anti-nihilistic) view of the world and death often comes across as rather jarring and out-of-place for a holy book, with some even questioning why it's even in the Bible in the first place. Christians scholars at least tend to Hand Wave it by claiming that the events of the New Testament have made parts of the book outdated, as is the case with other parts of the Old Testament according to Christian theology.
  • Values Resonance: The reflection on how everyone ends up in the same place, and the exhortations to enjoy simple pleasures in what time we have on earth, wouldn't sound out of place in the mouth of a modern secularist. It also contains an amount of skepticism towards the supernatural that one wouldn't expect from a religious text. Even harsh critics of the Bible like Steve Wellsnote  called it "by far the best book in the Bible". The famous atheist author Richard Dawkins once remarked that "Ecclesiastes, in the 1611 translation, is one of the glories of English literature".
