YMMV / Bodyguard (UK 2018)

Go To

  • Complete Monster: Nadia Ali is a Middle Eastern Terrorist who led the train bombing operation, in an attempt to kill the hundreds of passengers aboard. Upon being caught by David Budd, she pretends to be a unwilling participant, while pinning her crime on her subordinate posing as her husband. Upon being recruited to Luke Aiken's conspiracy, Nadia would create a bomb for Aiken, that would later be used to kill Home Secretary Julia Montague and countless others caught in the blast radius. In return, Aiken would give Nadia more resources for her to create more bombs; she decides to test one out by having Aiken's men send her bomb to an elementary school that David's children attend, which ends up killing the police force sent to intercept it. Nadia would then spread false information about David, and later has Aiken strap a bomb vest onto David to frame him for all the bomb attacks.
  • He's Just Hiding: A lot of fans had this reaction to Montague's death since we never actually see a body. It got to the point that the BBC referenced it themselves in their Comic Relief spoof in which Montague climbs out of the boot of Budd's car and insists she's not dead, despite Budd assuring her that she is.
  • He Really Can Act: After being considered one of the weaker acting links on Game of Thrones and dabbling in more lightweight fare such as Cinderella (2015) and Ibiza, Richard Madden got outstanding reviews for his performance and even took home a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Television Series Drama, beating out Emmy winner and presumed frontrunner Matthew Rhys despite being an unexpected nominee for the category in the first place.
  • Memetic Mutation: Viewers insisting that Julia's not dead.
  • Moment of Awesome: When Budd threatens Luke Aiken upon realizing he and Craddock are working together, Aiken appears unfazed by Budd threatening him... until Budd promptly fires a bullet that hits the wall right next to Aikens, scaring him into cooperating. Aiken tries to maintain a facade of level-headedness, until he recognizes Budd is unstable enough to actually kill him right there––and then Budd narrowly prevents himself from shooting Aiken by firing the bullet at the ground. Seeing him reduced to a whimpering coward is incredibly satisfying.
  • Overshadowed by Controversy: The reveal that Nadia was the one behind the terrorist plot attracted heavy criticism, receiving accusations of Islamophobia, to the point that most references to the show in media afterwards were about that twist in particular (such as Hasan Minhaj's Patriot Act).
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Julia's budding romance with David, and David's love/hate relationship with her, is cut short very early in by Julia getting killed via bomb.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Everyone is linked to sinister political dealings, involving the Security Service, and David begins to suspect there's something like a coup happening, starting with Julia. But it's a Red Herring. They are all innocent, and it is in fact an attempt by organised crime to prevent one of Julia's bills going through.
  • The Woobie: David Budd, due to his PTSD from his deployment in Helmand. It broke down his marriage and nearly killed Julia while imagining himself back in Afghanistan.
