YMMV / Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice

Go To

  • Fair for Its Day: Back when it premiered, the movie was revolutionary for its sympathetic portrayal of open relationships. Nowadays said portrayal comes off as dated and harmful, as the characters encourage each other to cheat rather than communicate with their partners.
  • Once Original, Now Common: When it was first released, creating an uncensored sex comedy was innovative.
  • Retroactive Recognition: This marks Leif Garrett's movie debut as Ted and Alice's son Jimmy Henderson.
  • Signature Scene: Ted and Alice's conversation in the bedroom after Carol tells them Bob cheated on her with a girl in San Francisco.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: It's hard to care for Ted after he repeatedly tries to coerce Alice into sex and tells her, to her face, that he doesn't care about her consent. He later also drives Alice to a small mental breakdown when he loudly reveals he slept with another woman without her knowledge.
  • Values Resonance: For all its dated ideas about polyamory, the movie's treatment of women is excellent. Carol and Alice are not afraid to set boundaries and be honest with their husbands, and Carol in particular is very comfortable with her sexuality. Bob and Ted, for their part, feel safe sharing their feelings with their wives and are not afraid of seeking comfort from them.
