YMMV / Better Call Saul S3 E5: "Chicanery"

Go To

  • Award Snub: Michael McKean was considered to have had one of the best performances seen on TV in 2017 thanks to this episode, and yet he didn't even receive a nomination at the Emmy Awards.
  • Catharsis Factor: After all his lies, trickery, and sabotaging of Jimmy's career, it is so painfully satisfying to see Chuck completely melt down in court and torpedo his own law career once Jimmy reveals his trump card.
  • Memetic Mutation: The word "chicanery", said by Chuck in his iconic rant and the episode's title became a popular buzzword among the fandom in jokes, memes, and discussions related to the series.
  • Signature Scene: Jimmy revealing that Chuck's had a cell phone battery planted in his pocket, followed by Chuck's unhinged rant on the stand where he airs all of his grievances against Jimmy, making it clear that he has a deep-seeded personal hatred of his brother that makes his testimony concerning the forged Mesa Verde documents invalid, is one for the entire show. The scene is the climax of the battle that Jimmy and Chuck have been having for the last season and a half, and features a very memorable performance of a mental breakdown by Michael McKean. It's also become the subject of countless memes in the Better Call Saul community, including snowclones of Chuck's rant applied to different characters and contexts, and video edits.
