YMMV / Batman Beyond S 2 E 16 The Last Resort

  • Complete Monster: Dr. David Wheeler is a corrupt child psychologist who uses his rehabilitation "ranch" for teenagers as a moneymaking scheme and to satisfy his controlling personality. Wheeler manipulates parents to send their children to his ranch for even minor pranks, then treats the children like prisoners who Wheeler deprives of sleep, verbally and psychologically abuses, and even refuses to let go to the bathroom for punishments. Wheeler throws any teenagers who step out of line into "ISO"—short for isolation—cells that deprive them of sight and sound for long periods to mentally break them down, with one boy shown to be left a vacant shell for days following a trip to ISO. When Terry McGinnis tries to expose Wheeler's crimes, Wheeler plans to throw him in ISO to "take the fight out of him", then have him murdered to keep him quiet.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: A few years after the episode aired, a similar occurrence happened in real life called the "kids for cash" scandal where a judge preaching zero tolerance would send off juvenile offenders to jail in order to get kickbacks for each bed that was filled.
  • Nightmare Fuel: The entire concept of the ranch, its use of cult-like tactics like brainwashing, the fact that Wheeler uses Sean to make people so afraid that they'll send their kids there in an effort to keep them from becoming like him, and the fact that there are real-life institutions like this that do all of this and worse to kids, and sadists just like Dr. Wheeler who run them.
  • Tear Jerker: Some of the dialogue from the teenagers and parents when they are reunited in the end. One of the teenagers reunited with their family remarks that they never thought they would see their parents again and another is seen in the background being embraced by her mother and having her head stroked. It's also a bit hard to hear with everyone talking at the same time but at least one mother remarks that she will never forgive herself and one teenager remarks that she can't believe she's out. And unlike all the other families, Chelsea clearly does not forgive her father for sending her to the ranch and their relationship is likely going to be even worse.
