YMMV / Bannertail: The Adventures of Gray Squirrel

Go To

  • Adaptation Displacement: The anime itself is obscure enough, but the original novel by Ernest Thompson Seton is even more obscure.
  • Alternate Character Interpretation: Is Akācho only after Sue because he sees her as a conquest, or does he genuinely care about her? After the thirteenth episode, he inexplicably gives up trying to woo her. It's possible he developed a case of I Just Want My Beloved to Be Happy.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: This show was very popular in Germany and Spain during the 70's and 80's. It also had a following in Italy too during the 80's.
  • Heartwarming Moments:
    • Banner being reunited with his adoptive mother.
    • Banner impersonating the baby bunny to try and make the mother rabbit happy.
    • The ending, showing an elderly Banner and Sue and their many children.
    • Sue staying up all night with the drugged Banner so he won't die.
    • Banner rescuing the chipmunk who'd lied about killing a fox, even though he was kind of a Jerkass and didn't deserve Banner's kindness, showing that Banner will help anyone.
  • Suspiciously Similar Song: If you think the theme song for the Spanish dub sounds like the first Italian opening of Doraemon, then you're right.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • The scene in the first episode where Banner is saved by the mother cat, but she becomes trapped, yelling at him to run and save himself from the fire as he screams "Mama!" over and over again.
    • The ending of the episode with the mother rabbit. Sheesh.
    • The scene where Sue finds Banner all drugged and goes to far as to sit on his tail so he won't attack another animal. She refuses and starts to cry.
    • The death of Uncle Owl. Banner cries and punches a tree in his mindless rage, incapable of doing anything against the human who killed his friend. It's a surprisingly powerful moment. The Spanish dub is even more worse.
  • The Woobie: The poor mother rabbit who is sad and worried throughout the episode about her missing child (who's actually killed). Doesn't help that she never returns after that episode.
