YMMV / Bad Grandpa

Go To

  • Critical Dissonance: The movie earned mixed reviews from critics (like all the Jackass movies save Jackass Forever), but audiences enjoyed it, as the film opened at #1 with $32.1 million, already more than doubling its $15 million budget.
    • Not only that, but it dropped only 38 percent in its second weekend; which is the best second weekend hold in the franchise (all the other Jackass films dropped at least 44 percent in their second weekend), and went on to have the best staying power of all the Jackass films, making more than three times its opening weekend gross in the long run with $102 million.
    • On top of all that, it also got nominated for an Oscar (Best Makeup and Hairstyling), the first movie in the franchise to do this.
  • He Really Can Act: Johhny Knoxville may be a comic actor, but he shows he has some chops during Irving's (Temporary) farewell to Billy.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Irving enters Billy into a beauty pageant for girls, with Billy dressed in drag, and in an attempt to be unique and wow the judges, they come up with an incredibly inappropriate routine where Billy dances around the stage like a stripper - which only succeeds in freaking out the judges and the audience, despite Billy's own enjoyment of it, to the point where several mothers can be seen covering their daughters' eyes. Seven years later, "Cuties" would have an incredibly similar climax where Amy and her friends reach the final round of a dance competition and try to impress the judges by performing dance moves that are way too mature for girls their ages (like twerking), disgusting pretty much everyone in the crowd - except the climax of "Cuties" is played for drama instead of laughs. That film stirred up quite a bit of controversy, and in the wake of it, many jokes were made that Billy and Irving were ahead of their time.
  • Tear Jerker: The previously mentioned farewell with Billy. Poor Irving can barely hold himself together.
