YMMV / Avatar: The Last Airbender "The Northern Air Temple"

Go To

  • Fridge Logic: The Mechanist was able to make tanks and drills for the Fire Nation, but how to make a hot air balloon (which was invented a century before the tank) eluded him?
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Aang is upset that non-Airbenders live here but ultimately comes to peace with it. However, this is a lot sadder once you realize that seventy years later once there are new Airbenders, the whole temple gets melted off the cliff by Ghazan.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: The Mechanist and his followers’ backstory is certainly tragic, being refugees that needed a place to call home. That doesn't stop many from feeling like their efforts to modernize the Northern Air Temple went way too far, completely desecrating the temple in completely unnecessary ways, and thus disrespecting the cultural heritage of an extinct civilization that was unfairly eradicated on the flimsy basis that it was "empty". The fact that some of his efforts contributed to the faction responsible for the genocide in the first place doesn’t help his case.
