- Jerkass Woobie: Mary is very much a bitter and clueless alcoholic who can never seem to take a hint — but it's almost impossible to not feel for her, even at her most annoying, because she's so obviously lonely and desperate for companionship.
- One-Scene Wonder: Imelda Staunton only appears in the opening scene as a deeply unhappy woman seeking Gerri's help (Gerri is a counselor) for her insomnia.
- Tear Jerker:
- The opening scene with Imelda Staunton, whose character plainly states that the only way she could be happy is if she had a different life. As the film goes on, it's easy to imagine that Mary could have easily been in the same position.
- The ending. Most viewers will have been in Mary's position at least once in their lives.
