YMMV / Andrei Rublev

Go To

  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: The film opens with a mob attacking a man who is trying to create a flying machine. The machine takes off, crashes, and kills its driver. This incident is never referenced again.
  • Jerkass Woobie: Kirill insults his fellow monks, senselessly beats his loyal and friendly dog to death in a fit of rage, and spitefully informs on a jester for telling ribald jokes about the Boyars (resulting in the imprisonment and torture of the poor jester). Over a decade later, Kirill returns and confesses that he acted the way that he did because he was driven mad by jealousy over his lack of artistic talent in comparison to Andrei, and spends the rest of his life atoning for his sins by copying scriptures by hand while abjectly begging Andrei and other monks for forgiveness.
  • One-Scene Wonder:
    • Yuri Nikulin, one of the most beloved actors and clowns in the Soviet Union, in his role as Patrikei the messenger.
    • Rolan Bykov shines as the skomorokh (jester) in the film's first act (though he's technically a two-scene wonder since he reappears briefly in the final act).
