YMMV / Alice and Sparkle

Go To

  • Dancing Bear: By Ammaar Reshi's own admission, Alice and Sparkle was made more as an experiment to show off the capabilities of modern AI programs like ChatGPT and Midjourney than as a genuinely good piece of children's literature.
  • Overshadowed by Controversy: Many children's book illustrators such as Adriane Tsa and Michelle Jing Chan have criticized the book both for demeaning their painstakingly honed talents and for potentially infringing on copyright by using AI programs trained on their illustrations. Given the book only sold about 70 copies in its first 10 days on the market, it is better known for this debate than for the actual contents of the story. Reshi, for his part, has conceded that traditional children's book creators have a point and asked AI creators like OpenAI to take those copyright issues into account.
  • Unintentional Uncanny Valley: While Alice's face usually looks okay, her limbs and hands are subject to the common types of distortions that text-to-image programs like Midjourney cause when directed to portray humans. She often looks like she has spindly claws. And the constant changes in appearance can be disorienting for readers as well.
