- Alternate Character Interpretation: Grace Marks - an innocent woman traumatized by the terrible events which she endured? Someone suffering from a split personality disorder as a result of those traumas? Or a cunning master manipulator who twists the truth to make herself look innocent and naive?
- Nightmare Fuel:
- The terrible conditions endured by the people on the ship are hard to watch. It's even worse when one realizes that this is really how poor people traveled back then. Some did not survive the journey.
- Almost every man in Grace's life tries to, or sometimes succeeds in sexually abusing her: her violent, alcoholic father, George Parkinson, James McDermott, the asylum doctors and Mr. Kinnear. It really drives home how difficult and dangerous life was for lower class women like Grace, who were preyed on by the men who held power over them.
- Mary's botched abortion and death.
- McDermott using an axe to bloodily chop Nancy's leg off, then his voiceover stating he cut her body into four pieces and buried it.
