YMMV / Alan Bennett's Talking Heads

Go To

  • Aluminum Christmas Trees: Miss Fozzard works at a department store called Matthias Robinsons which closed in the 70's.
  • Death of the Author: After the monologues were put on the A-Level syllabus Alan Bennett received letters from students asking what he meant by certain things. He responded that their ideas were as good as his, and that they should treat him like a dead author who was thus unavailable for comment.
  • Les Yay: Rosemary and Fran. Probably.
  • Retroactive Recognition: Irene Ruddock from "A Lady of Letters" is played by Patricia Routledge, who would later be best known for playing Hyacinth Bouquet in Keeping Up Appearances.
  • Unintentional Period Piece: The plays are set in the 80's and 90's. However, Bennett himself admits the Leeds he portraits in the work is the Leeds in his head. For example, Miss Fozzard works at Matthias Robinsons, but the store was closed in the 70's 20 years before the play was written.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: In the series "A Chip in the Sugar", Graham faces several challenges, and his doubts about his mother's new partner, Mr. Turnbull, are proven correct. However, his controlling and manipulative tendencies may present a challenge when trying to empathize with his character. The use of Unreliable Narrators in the series may have intentionally created such issues, but it may also deter some viewers.
