In the days following the episode's airing, the fallout became the show's first big fandom-shaking event, as an outpouring of outrage at the sinking of Finn/Princess Bubblegum was directed at the crew. When the "Mathematical!" recap show posted a video asking if Finn and PB should date, all but one of the answers was a resounding "yes" (the one person who said no thought the ship was disgusting and wrong). Not only did the episode spark outrage, it also sparked the fandom's first serious case of Ship-to-Ship Combat, with the surprisingly-large Finn/Marceline (Finnceline) fanbase seeing the episode as their best hope for making Finnceline canon, with Fubblegum shippers retorting that the former was already sunk in "Go With Me". As Fix Fics came pouring in, a few fans began turning their attention to the mysterious character Pendleton Ward introduced at Comic-Con earlier that year named Flame Princess. The fandom finally settled down once Flame Princess was introduced, and it became clear that Fubblegum was sunk to make way for Finn/Flame Princess (Flinn), which itself was eventually sunk and caused an even bigger and more vicious shipping war.
