• Alternate Character Interpretation: While his good nature is probably intended to be taken at face value, one wonders if Leo Minosa's really as saintly as he comes across.
• Award Snub: It received an Academy Award nomination for Best Story and Screenplay, but it wasn't nominated for Best Picture, Director or Actor.
• Tear Jerker: Leo's parents are the only ones sincerely devastated by his predicament; Leo's mother is shown having to leave the diner to handle her emotions and Leo's father says that he doesn't care if the tourists leave, all he wants is his son.
• Vindicated by History: Audiences and critics were originally turned off by the movie's extreme cynicism about news reporters and police officers. Now the movie is a well-regarded part of Roger Ebert's Great Movies list and The Criterion Collection.
