- Alternate Character Interpretation: Are Thompson and Joky a litte more than just good friends? Certainly, Thompson's reaction to Joky's death is extreme. It is improbable that Hodgson meant to imply they were gay lovers, even though that sort of thing actually happened among the crew on long sea voyages. Cenrtainly, they have a close friendly mentor-apprentice dynamic going.
