* HarsherInHindsight: Hinata's remarkably mature response to MaliciousSlander in episode 5 becomes this after [[spoiler: episode 11 reveals that she was bullied the same way in the past, and knows how to just deal with and ignore gossip likely as a result of said bullying. Moreover, her policy to "not fight mean with mean" ends up being proven the ''wrong'' way to go about it, as Shirase gets across when she refuses to sugarcoat things for the backstabbing "friends" who caused Hinata's bullying to start with.]]

* NarmCharm: Shirase, then the other girls, then [[UpToEleven everyone on board the ship]] engaging in a collective "screw you!" [[CrowdSong shout]] is totally cheesy. That said, it's also extremely [[CatharsisFactor satisfying]] for anyone who has ever been looked down on, mocked, or bullied for having "unrealistic dreams". Even the post-episode reaction comments on sites like Crunchyroll and 4chan were fans joining in with everyone!

* {{Adorkable}}: Despite Shirase's initial AloofDarkHairedGirl image, she can actually be quite awkward and unsure. She can also get excitable and even goofy when it comes to Antarctica, one of the biggest examples is her reaction to Yuzuki offering her spot on the civilian expedition in Episode 3. The awkwardness hits hardest whenever she tries to participate in Yuzuki's vlogs--despite acting confident most of the time, she's incredibly camera-shy, becoming a stuttering anxious wreck while just rehearsing her lines.

* FamilyUnfriendlyAesop: Spite is not always a bad thing, and it can even be an effective motivator. Shirase's overt pettiness towards everyone who doubted and mocked her is treated as completely reasonable, and at times [[{{Determinator}} even inspiring.]] Similarly, [[spoiler: Hinata [[RejectedApology not wanting to forgive]] her [[FalseFriend former clubmates]] is portrayed as completely justified, and Shirase telling them to piss off is a SugarWiki/MomentOfAwesome.]]

** Shirase e-mailing to her mother occasionally about her daily journey to Antarctica becomes [[spoiler: a massive amount of tearjerkers of its own, since that her mother was long gone already ''even before the whole series was started''. Which means that by the time Shirase found her mother's laptop and connected it to the internet, all the e-mails that she sent of her own was never read by Takako.]]

* ItWasHisSled: Shirase's mother [[spoiler:being DeadAllAlong,]] sort of. Several viewers expressed doubt about whether or not this was the case in discussions of earlier episodes, but most saw it coming miles away, even before it was explicitly spelled out in episode 11. But this is not necessarily a [[Administrivia/TropesAreTools bad thing]], as [[spoiler: the scenario possibilities on how would Shirase dealt with her mother's death]] are the things that the audience keeps on guessing.

* SuspiciouslySimilarSong: The scary music that plays during episode 4 (when Kimari is confronted by her mom about her plans) and episode 6 (when Shirase realizes that she had Hinata's passport in her purse all along) is more than a little reminiscent of the iconic theme of ''Film/{{Jaws}}''.
* SugarWiki/VisualEffectsOfAwesome: It has been generally said that [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BbIKiZfGRgU the running scene]] from episode 2 was a massive achievement of storytelling and animation development as it perfectly encapsulates the entire series' atmosphere and youthful adventure feel.

** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJeOoMkXTFw Haruka Tooku]], which is played at times, is guaranteed to fill you with a youthful resolve to embark on a new journey to frontiers unknown. Listening to this while watching the girls [[spoiler: finally enjoying their first aurora scenery in the final episode]] certainly helps the case.
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJ7q42yZ13w One Step]] is a heart-thumping song that compels you to take the first step to make true of dreams that for others might seem to be impossible to reach.

*** Even among the expedition members, Gin has this especially bad, as Episode 9 drops several hints that [[spoiler: Takako was [[AmbiguouslyGay more than just a friend and coworker to her]]. And not only was she the one who was forced to call off the search for Takako, but it's also revealed that Gin heard what was likely Takako's dying words over the radio. In her frustraton, she ''snapped off the headrest'' in the snowcat with her bare hands!]]

** I took it more as vindication. After a long time of people not just having no faith in her dream, but actively slandering and teasing her for it, she finally achieved it. Rubbing it in the faces of the naysayers is her hard-earned right at that point.

* CounterpartComparison: The series' main girls and other characters remind some fans of characters in ''{{Manga/KOn}}'' in both appearance and characterization. Thus, the fandom tends to refer to ''Yorimoi'' as "The ''K-Ons'' (or "Keions'') go to Antarctica":
** Kimari is the equivalent of Yui, the airhead of the group, sweet, kind and gullible to a fault; there's even a nod in later episodes of ''Yorimoi'' which show that Kimari cuts her bangs by herself rounded off and sloppily, much like Yui did accidentally for her graduation yearbook photo;
** Shirase is the equivalent of Mio, a dignified and quiet AloofDarkHairedGirl, and the main backbone of the group; they both have stage fright but perform excellently under the spot, Shirase being more of a CloudCuckooLander;
** Hinata is the equivalent of Ritsu, a playful and happy tomboy; Hinata, however, has a more sad development than Ritsu;
** Yuzu is the equivalent of both Asuza and Mugi; like Asuza, Yuzu is the dutiful junior of the main group and preoccupies herself with their discipline; like Mugi, Yuzu is affluent and something of an outsider to the "common" things her friends engage into, being boundlessly curious;
** Megumi is the equivalent of Nodoka, both being childhood friends of Kimari/Yui, who have dedicated themselves to taking care of their friends throughout their lives; Megumi, however, is shown to be more petty/selfish than Nodoka;
** Rin is something of an equivalent to Ui, though she has less characterization as Kimari's sister than what Ui has with Yui;
** Kanae, Yumiko and Gin take the role of Sawako as the adult support for the girls as their caring guides and teachers.

* CounterpartComparison:
** The main girls (and Megumi) can be compared to the cast of ''Manga/KOn''. In particular, Kimari and Yui are both [[GenkiGirl cheerful]] and seemingly [[OrdinaryHighSchoolStudent average young girls,]] while Shirase is a beautiful and seemingly cool girl who's actually very [[ShrinkingViolet shy]] [[NotSoAboveItAll and]] [[{{Adorkable}} dorky.]] Hinata and Ritsu are harder to compare, but they're similarly excitable, and Hinata's teasing of Shirase has reminded a lot of viewers of [[VitriolicBestBuds Ritsu and Mio's dynamic.]] Yuzuki has traits in common with both Mugi and Azusa, combining the former's FriendlessBackground with the latter's LittleMissSnarker tendencies. Most notably, however, is [[ChildhoodFriend Megumi.]] She initially comes off as a straight up {{Expy}} of Nodoka, right down to the [[{{Meganekko}} glasses,]] but it soon becomes apparent that [[spoiler: she's actually a {{Deconstruction}} of the character archetype. Megumi is essentially a more severe take on Nodoka's [[OutOfFocus fading importance to Yui's life,]] showing how hurtful it would really be to have your best friend from childhood suddenly find a new group of friends and distance themselves from you.]]
** Shirase's mother Takako is, personality-wise, almost spot-on with [[Anime/LoveLive Honoka Kosaka]] as a GenkiGirl natural leader who manages to win others to her side and end up fulfilling a dream that many thought impossible due to her charisma and never-give-up attitude. But, just like Megumi above, she ends up being a {{Deconstruction}} of the character archetype:[[spoiler: as her {{Determinator}} attitude ends up leading her to an icy death, leaving her fellow expedition members with [[MyGreatestFailure awful guilt and sadness]], and that's to say nothing of the trauma it afflicts on her young daughter]].

** It's hard not to empathize with Yuzuki's RefusalOfTheCall to take part of the Antarctic expedition after she reveals that she had a FriendlessBackground due to constantly working as a celebrity. She tells the girls that she wants to become an OrdinaryHighSchoolStudent in high school, befriending girls her age and hanging out with them at the mall and karaoke bars. Kimari immediately hugs her tightly, understanding the suffering she's gone through.

** Basically the original crew from the first expedition three years prior. They've all suffered some hardships, and even with this new trip, are severely limited in terms of budget and supplies. Nevertheless, several of the women talk about wanting to go no matter what. [[spoiler:It's very likely they want to find Shirase's mother, who is presumably dead, and give her a proper burial. The girls even suspect that something was being hidden from them when they asked about the feasibility of the trip.]]
