YMMV / A Monster in Paris

Go To

  • Awesome Music:
    • "La Seine" ("The Seine") sung by Lucille and Francœur. In the French version, Francœur has the dulcet tones of Matthieu Chedid, and it will give you chills.
    • "Un monstre à Paris" ("A Monster in Paris"): A very sad song for the very sad scene where Francœur's perspective is explored and his true nature as a Gentle Giant is revealed.
    • "Papa Paname" ("Daddy Paname", "Paname" being a nickname for Paris): It's very catchy and a pleasure to listen to.
    • "L'amour dans l'âme" ("Love in the soul"): a very sad song that symbolizes Francœur's final farewell due to the characters assuming that he's dead.
    • "Un p'tit baiser" ("A lil' kiss"): An upbeat, cheerful and delicious jaunt that turns the finale's somber tone into a proper Happy Ending.
  • Cliché Storm: The film can come off as this. Some viewers dislike it for featuring cliche character archetypes and generally playing it safe in terms of story, while others enjoy it specifically because it's a straightforward story with easy-to-like characters and a simple plot.
  • Fan-Preferred Couple: Lucille and Francœur, who were wildly shipped even before the movie came out. Fans see Lucille's canonical relationship with Raoul as underdeveloped and a case of Strangled by the Red String, and her perceivably better chemistry with Francoeur overall doesn't help matters.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Maynott gets steadily more corrupt as the movie progresses, but he finally crosses the line by attempting to flat out murder Lucille.
  • Strangled by the Red String: Lucille and Raoul. Raoul's feelings for Lucille are hinted at multiple times throughout the movie, but the final scene where Lucille says she's always loved him seems to come out of nowhere. Many fans feel that it was only added to detract from viewers shipping Francœur/Lucille due to the Squick their relationship would imply.
  • Ugly Cute: Francœur is quite possibly the most charming giant mutated flea you will ever meet.
  • The Woobie:
    • Francœur. Despite being a Gentle Giant with a beautiful singing voice, he spends most of the movie hated and pursued by the police and the general public, purely because people think he is an evil monster despite never hurting anyone. He spends a lot of time lonely and in desire of companionship until he meets Lucille, and afterwards finds his life threatened by the insane Maynott, who almost kills him at several points.
    • Émile can count as this too. When the heroes try and find a way to make sure the police won't find Francœur:
Émile: Why not shrink him back to his normal size? The smaller you are, the less you're noticed. I'm well-placed to know that...
