YMMV / A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder

Go To

  • Ho Yay: It's Better With a Man is an entire song dedicated to it.
  • Jerkass Woobie:
    • Monty's murdering spree of his family members is fairly diabolical, but he's also lived a rough life as a poor man, he's been rejected by the woman he loves, his mother has recently died, and he's been denied his right as a D'Ysquith simply because his mother was disowned over an elopement.
    • The sympathy level of the D'syquith family varies from person to person, but most of them really don't deserve their fates, and for all their faults, they're not murderers like Monty.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: Jefferson Mays' portrayal of the D'Ysquith Family was seen by many as the main reason to watch the Broadway production. Even after the show closed on Broadway, it's still best known as the musical where a single actor plays so many roles.
    • Some people just watch the show because of Bryce Pinkham's portrayal of Stolas.
  • Les Yay: Phoebe and Sibella, depending on how they're played, have their moments during "That Horrible Woman".
  • One-Scene Wonder: Major Lord Bartholomew D'Ysquith, played by Jefferson Mays in enormous fake muscles, is killed in the same scene he's introduced.
  • Ron the Death Eater: Sibella's biggest problem with her husband Lionel Holland is simply that he's boring. Fan interpretations of him range from Jerkass at best to Domestic Abuser at worst, usually to justify having Monty kill him in order to get Sibella out of her marriage.
