• Awesome Music: The first short repeatedly features a small snippet from the song "Hyper Darts Challenge," composed by Firth as Locust Toybox. The full song can be found here.
• Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: In the first cartoon, there's a blink-and-you'll-miss-it frame where the image of a thin man with a mustache flashes in the sky (which also appears in the thumbnail of the YouTube upload). The same man appears again in the second cartoon when he replaces Jonathan's reflection in the mirror to insult him and try to encourage him to remove his eyes. The man is never referenced by the characters, and no context is given for his manifestation.
• Diagnosed by the Audience: Jonathan is often interpreted as somebody who suffers from severe depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, or a combination of these.
• Epileptic Trees: The aforementioned man with the mustache is widely theorized to have been Jonathan's father.
• Jerkass Woobie: Jonathan is a mood-swinging Jerkass and (possibly) a murderer, but he's also genuinely mentally ill and in a lot of pain. It isn't hard to feel sorry for him.
